Verdere informatie

The week of the International Martini Organ Competition Groningen will feature five monumental Groningen organs. Of these five, the Timpe organ in the Nieuwe Kerk seems to be the odd one out, as it’s the only one that is not a Schnitger organ (or a reconstruction like the one in the Lutherse Kerk). Reason enough to give this unique instrument some extra attention.

On Tuesday afternoon August 2nd, a special event is organized in which not only the Timpe organ itself, but also the church and the surrounding Hortus neighborhood are put in the spotlight. The titular organist Stef Tuinstra will tell the participants about the building history and the characteristics of the organ. Of course he will also demonstrate the rich sound variations of this beautiful instrument. The other part of the program is a guided walk through the Hortus area.

There is room for 50 people (with a minimum of 20). The group will be split in two with one half beginning with the city walk through the Hortus neighborhood, and the other half beginning with the organ demonstration. During the break, a generously catered high tea will be served.

Stef Tuinstra (1954) studied organ, piano, harpsichord and trombone at the Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen. He got his organ lessons from Wim van Beek. He graduated summa cum laude and also received diplomas in church music and choral conducting. In 1979 he received the Prix d' Excellence for organ. Tuinstra is organist of the famous baroque organ in the Martinikerk, the Timpe organ in the Nieuwe Kerk in Groningen and the Faber organ in Zeerijp. As a concert organist he performed in Europe, Japan and the USA. He is regarded worldwide as an expert in improvisation, from Renaissance to contemporary, and also teaches in that field. Tuinstra is the author of several publications on organ building and performance practice.
